Dr. Robert M. Thomas Jr. received his medical degree from the St. Louis University School of Medicine. After completing an internship at St. Louis University Hospitals, Dr. Thomas completed a three-year residency in Ophthalmology at the Metropolitan General Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Thomas, a pioneer of small incision cataract surgery, has been one of the leaders in the field of refractive surgery since 1984. As one of the few doctors who is board-certified by both the American Board of Ophthalmology and the American Board of Eye Surgeons, Dr. Thomas is highly qualified to provide you with the level of care and skill you seek in an eye care professional.
As a testament to his leadership in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Thomas has been a regular speaker at surgical seminars and has published articles for the American Intra-Ocular Implant Society Journal and Ophthalmology Management. He is a member of many professional societies and one of the founding members of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.
Dr. Thomas is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons. He is a charter member of the American College of Eye Surgeons. Dr. Thomas is also a member of the California Medical Association, the San Diego County Medical Society, and is a past president of the San Diego Eye Bank. He is on the medical staff of Scripps Mercy Hospital and the San Diego Outpatient Surgery Center.

Dr. Suzanne Handler received her medical degree from St. Louis School of Medicine. After an Internship at St. John’s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis, Dr. Handler completed a three-year residency in Ophthalmology at the Anheuser Busch Eye Institute in St. Louis, Missouri.
Dr. Handler is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. She has presented some of the most advanced technologies in refractive eye surgery at annual meetings for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Academy for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Dr. Handler has produced numerous publications in peer-reviewed ophthalmic journals. This renowned eye surgeon is a staff member with many of San Diego’s major hospitals.
